The Optional 1% Sales Tax, also known as the Penny Tax, has supported Campbell County since 1976. Every four years, the residents of Campbell County vote to renew the Penny Tax because of its significant, positive impacts on our community.
The dollars generated by the Penny Tax stay in Campbell County to be reinvested in projects and organizations across our communities and county.
The Optional 1% Sales Tax is up for renewal on the 2026 General Election ballot. We support the Penny Tax and encourage you to vote FOR the Option 1% Sales Tax this November.
The Penny Tax revenue is collected and distributed to Campbell County, the City of Gillette, and the Town of Wright. Registered voters then get to vote how the money is spent across projects, programs, and organizations across the county.
The Optional 1% sales tax applies only to items that are subject to a “sales and use tax”—it DOES NOT apply to food, gasoline, home purchases, prescriptions or rental payments. It is estimated that as much as 20 percent of the revenues from the 1% sales tax will be paid by out-of-county visitors and tourists.
Between July 1, 2022, and June 30, 2025, the Penny Tax funded Critical Infrastructure & Maintenance (58.1%), Public Safety Operations & Equipment (16.7%), and Community Support Programs (25.2%).
